Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin Continues Rolling Through Rehab

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin is set to make his second rehab start in his return from Tommy John surgery on Sunday for Triple-A Oklahoma City, via Bill Plunkett of the OC Register.

Gonsolin made his first rehab start back on Sep 10. In the start, Gonsolin pitched two innings and allowed three hits, no earned runs, and no walks while striking out three. It was an encouraging return for the 30-year-old pitcher, who has been out for the entire season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Gonsolin underwent surgery in 2023 after arm issues and forearm inflammation affected him throughout the season. After recording an ERA lower than 3.25 in his first four MLB seasons, Gonsolin struggled with a 4.98 ERA in 2023. He gave up 10 earned runs in his last start before going on the IL, and later Tommy John surgery.

When healthy, Gonsolin is a key member of the Dodgers’ rotation. During the 2022 season, Gonsolin was simply dominant at the mound. He started the season 11-0 and went 16-1 over 14 total starts. He pitched a career-low 2.14 ERA and struck out a career-high 119, making his MLB All-Star Game.

The Dodgers have not ruled out the possibility of Gonsolin returning to the starting rotation this season. With Clayton Kershaw, Gavin Stone, and Tyler Glasnow all on the injured list, and Glasnow ‘highly unlikely’ to return this season, the Dodgers could certainly use Gonsolin. However, the team does not plan to force him back during this season or the upcoming postseason run and is looking forward to what he will bring next season.

The Dodgers’ current rotation includes Jack Flaherty, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, and Walker Buehler, leaving limited proven commodities in the rotation with postseason baseball just around the corner.

Pitching in part cost the Dodgers in their postseason loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks last October, with Miller and Kershaw each allowing at least three earned runs over the first two runs. This gave the Diamondbacks the easy lead in the series, and the Diamondbacks went on to sweep Los Angeles.
