Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin to Make 2024 Debut

Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin will make his first minor league rehab start of the season on Tuesday with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The right-handed pitcher has not stepped on the mound in more than a year, with his last appearance on Aug. 18, 2023.

Gonsolin, 30, spent the last year recovering from Tommy John surgery. Last season was filled with injuries for Gonsolin, which likely contributed to his career-high 4.98 ERA.

Gonsolin was intended to be included in the Dodgers’ rotation for Opening Day 2023. However, he sprained his ankle in spring training, sending him to the 15-day IL to start the season. After returning from a rehab assignment at the end of April, Gonsolin pitched until mid-August. It was later revealed Gonsolin had been pitching with a torn UCL since June.

It has yet to be reported how long Gonsolin’s rehab assignment will last. But, the return of a healthy Gonsolin is desirable as the Dodgers struggle with a deficient rotation. Currently, the rotation includes Jack Flaherty, Walker Buehler, Bobby Miller, and Landon Knack. No member of the starting rotation who began the season with the Dodgers has avoided IL this season. The team needs as much depth as possible to make it through the postseason.

The 2022 National League All-Star would add experience and talent to a the Dodgers’ pitching staff in any capacity. Despite struggling last season, Gonsolin’s career ERA is 3.19, with a 2.14 career-best in 2022. The Northern California native has spent all five seasons of his career with the Dodgers.

In his rookie season in 2020, Gonsolin contributed to the Dodgers’ World Series championship. Baseball America selected Gonsolin for the All-Rookie Team and named him their Major League Rookie of the Year.
