Dodgers’ Trade Deadline Acquisition Was Shocked to Be Moved

The Dodgers added five players to the roster at the trade deadline, including St. Louis Cardinals utility player Tommy Edman.

Los Angeles participated in a three-team trade deal involving the White Sox and Cardinals. Through this trade, the Dodgers acquired Edman and right-handed pitcher Michael Kopech on Monday.

Edman has spent his entire five-season MLB career in St. Louis. The move to Los Angeles surprised Edman. The Michigan native has been on a rehab assignment with the Springfield Cardinals since July 9 as he recovers from wrist surgery. Right wrist inflammation placed Edman on the 10-day injured list on July 7, 2023. Edman returned to the field in August but quickly found himself back on IL in March with a right wrist sprain that led to the surgery.

“It was very shocking,” Edman said of the trade from St. Louis to The Orange County Register. “I haven’t heard of too many guys getting traded while on the injured list, so I kind of thought that my name wasn’t going to be a part of it. But I started to hear some stuff over the past couple of days. Obviously, I’m very excited that it was to the Dodgers.”

In addition to recovering from wrist surgery, Edman endured an ankle sprain that set his 2024 debut further back. But, Edman said he expects to return to the field soon.

Edman began a rehab assignment on July 9. He’s played eight games there as a designated hitter, slashing .207/.294/.241.

Although he’s yet to play the field because of his ankle injury, it will be worth watching where the Dodgers deploy Edman once he’s cleared. A gifted infielder and outfielder, Edman can fill one or both roles on the Dodgers depending on how they intend to shift their other personnel around — particularly Mookie Betts.

Edman told reporters he would be re-evaluated this week to determine how close he is to playing the field again.

“It shouldn’t be too long,” he said.

  1. How does someone on the injured list get traded? Isn’t there a rule against this? What does the author of this article have to tell us about this?

    1. Before you play for a sports team you sign a contract which basically makes you property of that team. The team can trade you, cut you, put you on waivers because you are their property.
