Former Dodgers Exec Becomes First Female GM to Lead Team to Postseason Berth
As the Marlins clinched a Wild Card spot on Saturday night, history was made. Miami general manager Kim Ng became the first female ever to lead a team to a postseason berth. Ng was an assistant GM with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2002-2011, working through two ownership groups and three GMs to help in building four playoff teams in LA (2004, 2006, 2008, 2009).
She was passed up for a few lead GM roles over the years, including with the Dodgers, Padres, Angels, Mariners, and Giants. In 2011, Ng left LA to join Major League Baseball as the senior vice president of baseball operations for the league and she stayed in that role until landing the job as the GM for the Miami Marlins in the 2020-2021 offseason.
After years of perseverance, Kim Ng finally got her shot and is capitalizing with Miami’s fourth playoff berth in the franchise’s 30 year history. The Marlins were one of the most aggressive teams at this year’s trade deadline, with Ng and company rebuilding the lineup and the bullpen. Manager Skip Schumaker praised the front office for the moves.
“They completely transformed our team, our lineup,” Schumaker said. “Made our bullpen deeper. When you acquire big people, that’s a big deal as well. It changed our clubhouse, it changed our culture, and it changed our lineup. Really checked off all the boxes.”
Congratulations to Ng and the Marlins organization!

Congratulations, GM Ng. It was great for the Dodgers to have broken the color line with Jackie Robinson. I only wish they had the courage to do the same with the gender line. Have a great rest of your career—you earned it!
Thanks but I’ll take Andrew Friedman.
