Kiké Hernandez Had Incredible Quote for Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Before World Series

Some Major League Baseball skippers are known to be a player’s manager. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is one of those.

Because Roberts is highly respected in the clubhouse by his players, there was a moment before Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Yankees when Kiké Hernández shared a powerful moment with Roberts that will stick with him for the rest of his life.

“I’ve never talked about this but I’ll tell this publicly,” Roberts said of the magical moment during an interview on MLB Network. “I can’t believe I’m even saying this but before Game 1 of the World Series, Kiké Hernández told me, ‘After this series, you’re going to the Hall of Fame.’

“That’s something that just blew my mind. I didn’t even think about that he was doing this and saying this for me.”

Roberts’ career winning percentage of .627 leads all active managers and ranks fifth in MLB history. He’s also sixth all-time in postseason victories, trailing only Hall of Famers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, and Bobby Cox, as well as future Hall of Famers Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy.

Roberts recently joined an elite group of 24 managers in MLB history to win at least four pennants. Of those, 22 are already in the Hall of Fame, with Roberts and Bochy as the only active members of the list.

“To be honest, Dave is the real reason why we’re here,” Mookie Betts said after the Dodgers defeated the Yankees to win the World Series. “I know there’s a lot of talk about Doc — (but) Doc is the best, man.

“Doc loves each and every person in here. Doc has confidence in each and every person in here. Doc never lost confidence in anybody in here. And no matter what we went through, he was always positive.”

Roberts has learned several things about his job but one thing specifically stands out. While leading the Dodgers to more wins than any other team since 2016, it is never because of him. But when the team loses, the blame is his to take.

“I’ve learned to have thicker skin and try to appreciate the fact that there’s always going to be criticism — maybe more jaded at times,” Roberts said this fall. “But it is a results business, and I get that.”

Since taking over in 2016, Roberts has led the Dodgers to two World Series championships and four National League pennants. Winning the second title, especially the club’s first full-season title since 1988, placed Roberts in elite company with Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda as the only Dodgers managers with multiple championships.

  1. Roberts is in great company when you mention him in the same breath with Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda! Way to go, Dave!
