Lucas Giolito News: Angels Swipe in and Trade for Dodgers Top Starting Pitcher Target
With the Dodgers having already played their game earlier today, tonight was supposed to be a calmer evening. But as we all know, nothing is calm during the MLB trade deadline. It had been rumored for weeks that LA was interested in going after Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito to help with their pitching woes.
But it wasn’t meant to be. The Dodgers cross-town rival, the Los Angeles Angels, decided they wanted to make a splash and made a move for Giolito, undercutting the Dodgers in the process. ESPN insider Jeff Passan was the first to drop the news.
Just a few hours after it was announced that the Angels would be keeping two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, the team made good on their promise to make a push toward the playoffs. They parted with their No. 2 and No. 3 prospects in the process, signaling they are serious about trying to win.
Giolito was one of the better pitchers available during this trade deadline, and the Angels got a guy to pair alongside Ohtani for the rest of the season.
For the year, Giolito owns an ERA of 3.79 and a WHIP of 1.22. He also has added in 131 strikeouts over 121 innings pitched.
With Giolito off the market, the Dodgers will now have to turn elsewhere for pitching help. There is less than a week left until the deadline so LA has some time to work with.
But if this deadline has shown us anything to this point, trades can happen at any moment.
