New Dodger Tommy Edman Reveals Where He’ll Play Once He’s Activated

When the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Tommy Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals, it was shocking. Edman has been on the injured list all season after undergoing off-season wrist surgery and dealing with an ankle sprain during his recovery.

With so many Dodgers out of the lineup due to injury, Edman would certainly help when he is activated — but where will he play?

The utility man answered that question in an interview with MLB Network Radio on Tuesday.

“Obviously, that’s something that the Dodgers have done a lot of over the past few years, having guys kind of move all over the field, which is something I have specialized in,” Edman said. “So, I’m making sure I’m staying ready.

“There’s a bunch of guys who are also on the injured list right now, who kind of move all around the field as well. And a big part of that is just who’s ready by the time I get back, and what position is needed at that point. So I’m ready. I’ll be ready for both infield and outfield. Could be third, second, short, center field. Who knows? But I’m kind of just making sure I’m ready at all positions.”

Edman has yet to resume a minor league rehab assignment since being traded to Los Angeles. Thursday, he’s scheduled to participate in a simulated game with Mookie Betts and Max Muncy.

The five-year veteran has experience at second base, shortstop, third base, and all three outfield positions in his MLB career, winning a Gold Glove at second in 2021. The switch-hitting utility man has a career OPS of .726 with slightly better numbers from the left side.

Los Angeles could really use the extra help in center field. Despite acquiring Gold Glove center fielder Keven Kiermaier at the trade deadline, there hasn’t been a consistent option who can perform consistently at the plate. Edman could be that guy.

Last season, he batted a career-low .248 with a .705 OPS. That’s still better than Andy Pages’ current .245 average/.679 OPS and Kiermaier’s .188/.531.

Before the trade, Edman spent much of July on a rehab assignment with the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate, batting .207 in eight games.
