River Ryan a ‘Possibility’ to Replace Bobby Miller in Dodgers’ Rotation, Per Dave Roberts
River Ryan is coming off one of the best starts in his young professional career with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
While a 12-3 loss to El Paso is shocking, Ryan pitched a season-high five innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, including a home run, with two walks and six strikeouts in his fifth start with OKC this season after starting the season on the Injured list.
El Paso’s scoring shellshocked the Dodgers affiliate in the sixth inning when Joe Kelly entered the contest. He pitched one-third of the sixth inning and faced five batters. He allowed a single, three walks, and four runs with one strikeout.
Ryan has looked good since coming off the IL; his last four starts have been spectacular with a 1.72 ERA, 19 strikeouts (31.7-percent K rate), and five walks in 15.2 innings. The timing of Ryan’s hot streak couldn’t come at a better time. With the Dodgers optioning Bobby Miller to Oklahoma City, they are searching for someone to replace him in the rotation.
Manager Dave Roberts told reporters in Philadelphia on Wednesday that Ryan “certainly is a possibility.”

Ryan could get an opportunity after the All-Star Break to make an appearance with the Dodgers similar to Justin Wrobleski, who made his big league debut in a spot start Sunday. With Tyler Glasnow on the IL, Clayton Kershaw still a couple of rehab starts away from returning, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s return questionable, it seems likely the Dodgers would tap into the farm system for extra help.
Perhaps Ryan is next in line for the Dodgers to call up.

Stick with an all-rookie rotation. That way we have a great excuse when we miss the playoffs.
