Rockies Beat Dodgers, Spoil Shohei Ohtani Milestone Game

The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped the second game of a three-game series to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, losing by a score of 4-3.

Justin Wrobleski started for the Dodgers and had a fantastic showing, posting yet another quality start for the Dodgers. He threw seven innings for the third consecutive start, allowing just one earned run with nine strikeouts.

Shohei Ohtani got the ball rolling for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first inning, scoring the first run of the game with a leadoff home run—the 300th of his career. Ohtani became the first Japanese-born player to enter the 300-homer club with his first-inning bomb, and became the fifth-fastest player to reach the milestone.

The Dodgers’ offense struggled to produce for the next few innings, but finally found a way to extend the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. LA loaded the bases with just one out, bringing center fielder Andy Pages to the plate. The NL’s starting center fielder at the All-Star Game drew a four-pitch walk, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

They couldn’t score any more in the fifth, though, as a pop up and a lineout brought the inning to a close.

The Rockies clawed a run back in the following half-inning, as outfielder Jake McCarthy grounded out with runners on second and third to bring home the visitors’ first run of the game.

Alex Freeland restored the Dodgers’ two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, singling home Tommy Edman, who reached base via error to lead off the inning.

The Dodgers gave up the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when reliever Will Klein came in to replace Wrobleski, followed by Jack Dreyer. Klein walked the first batter of the inning, and gave up a one-out single two batters later. After Dreyer came in, Miguel Rojas made a rare error at shortstop on a grounder, causing Kyle Karros to score and Cole Carrigg to advance to third base.

Another throwing error on the following play scored Carigg, as well as Tyler Freeman from first base. Evan Phillips came into the game for the ninth and struck out the first two batters he saw, then got the third out after a single later in the inning.

The Dodgers started the bottom of the ninth off well with two baserunners before they could record an out, but a popout, flyout and strikeout from the top of the order ended the game.

LA still leads the division by an almost unsurmountable 14 games, and will look to take the series in Wednesday’s contest, which begins at 7:10 p.m. PT.

  1. Come on, bullpen, get it together. 1st game of series vs. Colorado, Tanner Scott who has been mostly solid this year, blows a 3-run lead in the 9th inning. Fortunately, LAD won in extras. Game 2, another crooked number 3 run 8th inning. For Colorado. That our offense managed only 3 runs against a pitcher with an ERA approaching 7 is bad enough. Look, they’re a professional team who owns the worst record in the NL. You need to play better. With Sasaki’s inconsistencies on the mound tonight, the offense needs to wake up and do better, or we lose ANOTHER home series to ANOTHER team with a losing record. Pathetic effort.

These decisions, and they seem to be collective decisions, for the entire team to take a game off here and there is very obvious and disappointing. You may not be able to flip that switch back on when it matters most in October.

  2. Another game we lost and should have won, this one was on the manager, Why? Because we had two innings to go the 8th and 9th, leading 3-1.
We had the two best available closers in the bullpen so why not let Phillips pitch the 8th and let Tanner Scott pitch the 9th??
Oh no Roberts had to bring in Klien who was almost out of gas from pitching almost daily and then he brings in Dreyer who was out of gas, there goes the ballgame. LOST.
Of course the errors didn’t help by Rojas, and he wants to be a Manager?

  3. We have the bases loaded and a 3-0 count, and basically give away a run and end the inning. Very similar to the night before. Yes we hit the ball hard, but right at someone. I would take the pitch and make the pitcher throw a strike. We lost because we were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position, and left 9 runners on base. Colorado is outplaying LA so far in this series.

  4. I TOTALLY AGREE, COACH NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND GET IN THE GAME. ONE GAME MIGHT BE REAL BIG AT THE END OF THE YEAR
