Teoscar Hernandez’s Contract Desires Revealed: Should Dodgers Give Him This Deal?

The Los Angeles Dodgers remain interested in bringing back outfielder Teoscar Hernández this offseason. However, as of now, there doesn’t appear to be much progress on a new deal.

Hernández and the Dodgers are off on average annual value, the signing bonus, and the deferrals, as Dodgers Nation reported last week. Hernández is also drawing interest from a handful of other teams.

While Hernández has made it clear he wants to return to the Dodgers this offseason, nothing has materialized yet. Also, Hernández’s market hasn’t been as robust as expected following Juan Soto’s deal with the New York Mets.

This week, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand provided an update on Hernández’s free agency, including what contract he’s looking for from his next team.

“The Dodgers and Hernández seemed headed for a reunion, but the two sides haven’t been able to reach a deal thus far. That opened the door for other teams – namely the Red Sox and Blue Jays – to jump in on the outfielder, who is seeking a three-year deal in the $22-24 million a year range, per sources,” Feinsand wrote.

A three-year, $66 million deal would likely get it done at this point, but it’s currently unknown where the Dodgers are at in negotiations. The longer the Dodgers wait, though, the more risk there is that another team jumps in and offers Hernández what he’s seeking.

Hernández had a breakout 2024 season with the Dodgers after signing a one-year deal to reset his market. The 32-year-old slashed .272/.339/.501 with 33 home runs and 99 runs batted in. He appeared in 154 games in left and right field, and had an OPS of .840. He made the All-Star team, won the Home Run Derby, and played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ World Series run.

Now, the three-time Silver Slugger winner is looking to get paid and find some long-term stability. While he’s made it known he wants it to be in Los Angeles, he doesn’t seem to be planning on taking a massive discount to remain in L.A. — nor should he.

  1. For God’s sake! Give Teo what he wants and then some! He’s proven his worth to the Dodgers on and off the field.
He’s the fire that ignites this team!

    1. Absolutely!! He set the tone earlier in the season by winning the HR Derby (1st Dodger ever) and never looked back after that! Huge part of the reason why the Dodgers lifted the WS trophy this postseason.

  2. Yes, give it to him. if the season never stopped, he would still be doing what he was doing when it ended, producing. Next to the Big 3, he was the next best producer on the team which is why he was a silver slugger too. Your worry about his defense, don’t. He will come through because he wants it as bad as you do, we do. Keep him, wouldn’t have won the title without him.

  3. Totally Agree with Steve Mc Kinley!! And, may I add that— If you Lose Teoscar,— you Lose MORE than a Great Offensive and Defensive Star. You lose a Man who BRINGS a STAGGERING AMOUNT of PASSION and COMMITMENT to the Team!! Let’s Get this Man ABOARD NOW– Before he is SCOOPED Up by another Team!!

  4. And, what About Kike Hernandez. He is a “FIRECRACKER,” who supplied some IMPORTANT Hits, as well as a SPIRIT that Motivated his Teammates. Sign him UP ASAP!!! On the other Hand, Chris Taylor and Gavin Lux are VERY EXPENDABLE. Their Contributions in the past year were Poor to Mediocre. The Team needs Players who are ASSETS, and who can come through “IN THE Clutch.” Neither of these two Men were able to ELEVATE the Team, or to give the Team Consistent Hitting.

  5. Sign Teoscar now! He produced last season, and doesn’t deserve a cut in pay to be resigned. He is asking for 22-24 milion ayear fo 3 years. That is right about what he made last year, at 23.5 mil. He also doesn’t want any deferred salary, as a portion of his contract last year was deferred. I don’t understand what the front office is thinking and why they don’t get this deal done, when they have said they want Teo back. Sign him for 3 years and we will have our left fielder! Also, sign reliever Tanner Scott, to help anchor the late innings closer in the bullpen, and sign Ha-Seong Kim, to a multi year contract, he is a great defensive infielder, who can play anywhere in the infield, and has dramatically improved with his bat over the past couple years.

  7. KEEP TEO – he’s a GREAT player with a GREAT attitude – TOTALLY worth whatever they have to pay him!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Yeah I’ll just jump on the band wagon here….Sign Teoscar! This should have already been done. He is valuable to the team in many ways. Come on Dodgers, show him he’s wanted and give him what he wants!

  9. 66M while an astounding amount of money for almost every other profession, it doesn’t sound unreasonable for the crazy game of baseball and his record. Assuming that number is accurate. I hope to see him return.

  10. The three-year contract that Teoscar Hernández is asking for seems really modest compared to Juan Soto.
Even if he was asking for a five-year contract, I think it would be reasonable.
Recently, MLB has tended to pursue only small numbers, but things like leadership, mood-making, and dedication don’t show up in numbers.

  11. I agree that Teo lifted the Dodgers all season. I thought signing would be easily done; however, they are apart on terms.
I would be fine with Santander, who is two years younger with the same or better production. I also think getting Arenado to play third would work just fine. Move Muncy to second or left field.

  13. The thing about Teo, is that he hits in the postseason, something that was sorely lacking in 2023. Ohtani is up to the challenge as well. To me, that is the most important factor here. And the second most important factor is his team spirit. He’s a great dugout guy. He hits under pressure. He wants to be here. And we got deferrals from him last year. Pay him and sign him, even if we may be looking for another star pitcher.
