Blue Jays Free Agent Bo Bichette Linked to Dodgers

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette could be a target for the Dodgers in free agency as they look to add a quality bat to the lineup, easing the burden on the top stars.

Bichette was wearing blue during the World Series — not Dodger Blue, but baby blue. He hit a go-ahead three-run bomb early on during Game 7 of the World Series off Shohei Ohtani, giving Toronto the lead.

He battled a knee problem during the closing stages of the season, though Bichette managed to get healthy in time for the Fall Classic.

Now, months into the offseason, Bichette is still on the open market.

According to MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand, the Dodgers might end up being a realistic landing spot for the star hitter, who showed the ability to play at a different infield position.

“Bichette looked solid at second base during the World Series, and while it was a small, seven-game sample size, it was enough to convince teams that he can handle the position,” Feinsand wrote.

“Far more clubs are looking for help at second base than shortstop, so Bichette’s willingness to switch positions should bring more teams into play for his services.

“The Blue Jays could move Andrés Giménez to shortstop and play Bichette at second base if he returns, while the Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Mariners, and Rangers are also potential fits.”

The Dodgers’ infield is one of the oldest units in baseball. Max Muncy, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and Miguel Rojas are all in their mid-to-late 30s.

Bichette can be a plus defender, especially at second base, and he would present a meaningful upgrade on offense over Tommy Edman or Miguel Rojas, the two players who regularly fill in at second.

The biggest roadblock to a Bichette deal would be his desire to sign a long-term contract, which the Dodgers do not intend to offer this winter. If he is willing to settle on a short-term, high-salary contract, he could end up filling in the middle of the lineup with the Dodgers.
