Dave Roberts Believes Yoshinobu Yamamoto Was ‘Fantastic’ in Dodgers Win Over Cubs

Yoshinobu Yamamoto turned in his second stellar outing in a row. This time, he went five scoreless innings as the Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Saturday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised the 25-year-old after the game speaking with the media,

“Just with how those first couple innings started, to be able to get him through five innings … was big.”

Yamamoto loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs. He proceeded to strike out the next three batters to escape the jam. The second inning played out similarly. He loaded the bases and then pulled a magic trick for a consecutive inning.

Afterward, he cruised through the final three innings, striking out eight batters in total and throwing 80 pitches. While it looked like he could have gone a sixth inning, after the game Roberts noted that Yamamoto was on a pitch limit of about 85 pitches,

“Just being mindful of that, I thought he was fantastic.”

This performance earned Yamamoto his first major league win. A clubhouse tradition, Yamamoto was treated to a celebratory beer shower after the game.

He should face the San Diego Padres in the upcoming series back in L.A. He’ll be going for his second major league win against the team that scored five runs on him in the first inning in South Korea.
