Dave Roberts Gets Candid About Tyler Glasnow Returning to Dodgers: ‘Time is of the Essence’

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 16. At the time, it seemed like merely a precaution. Now, manager Dave Roberts revealed time is running out for Glasnow to even pitch in the postseason.

“He’s getting off the mound and he’ll probably have a more aggressive bullpen session [this week], but we just gotta know, we gotta get going,” Roberts told Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times. “We only have so much time before he [can] get built up and he’s pitching in major league games. Time is certainly of the essence.”

Glasnow’s second stint on the injured list because of elbow tendonitis has unfurled into somewhat of a nightmare for the Dodgers.

On Aug. 30, Roberts told reporters that the team was ‘hopeful’ Glasnow would make a return before the end of the season.

“We’re hopeful,” Roberts said. “I think hopeful. I think that there’s still a lot of variables, to be certain. But I think everyone in the organization is hopeful.”

As of late, it’s likely time is running out for the Dodgers ace to pitch in September.

Los Angeles invested millions in acquiring the right-hander from the Tampa Bay Rays in December. He was slated to play a pivotal playoff role for the Dodgers.

The team positioned Glasnow to spearhead the pitching efforts of the Dodgers in October, but now it seems he may only be a spectator of the postseason.

The 30-year-old had a 3.49 ERA and a 9-6 record before going on the injured list. Glasnow has thrown a career-high strikeouts with 168 through 134 innings.

Glasnow is accompanied by a majority of the Dodgers’ rotation in Clayton Kershaw, Gavin Stone, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the injured list.

The timelines for Glasnow and Kershaw to return are the most ambiguous. The Dodgers ace and veteran southpaw may not compete in the postseason.

Yamamoto is slated to return to the team by Tuesday but in a limited capacity. It will take several starts for the offseason acquisition to ramp up for his October.

Injuries have riddled the Dodgers clubhouse for the majority of the season, thus the adversity the team has had to face hasn’t yielded in 2024.

The Dodgers are depending on a rotation featuring Jack Flaherty, Walker Buehler, Bobby Miller, Justin Wrobleski, and Landon Knack to get them down the stretch unscathed.
