Dave Roberts Gets Honest About Andy Pages’ Struggles for Dodgers
Andy Pages may be in his second MLB season, but the 24-year-old is still making rookie mistakes.
The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up their first loss of the season on Friday, and ultimately lost the series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies capitalized on multiple of Pages’ mistakes. On Friday, Pages got caught in a pickle between first and second base. Left-handed starting pitcherJesús Luzardo successfully picked Pages off, contributing to Philadelphia’s 3-2 win over Los Angeles.

“As a young player, you still got to play the game the right way,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said about Pages. “He was doubled off a couple games ago. And this one, you go and you stop — you just can’t. … Gotta eliminate those outs on the bases.”
But Pages’ mistakes did not end there.
On Saturday, the starting center fielder called All-Star left fielder Teoscar Hernández off on a pop fly. Hernández was already running toward third base, meaning he had a higher chance of throwing catcher JT Realmuto out. Instead, Realmuto made it to third base safely.
And on Sunday, Pages misread a line drive from Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper that ultimately led the Phillies to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
“Yeah, he took a bad read,” Roberts said. “It was a line drive, hit hard. I think he broke in, then broke toward right field and at that point in time he was beat by the baseball. It was just a tough read.”
Pages had started for the Dodgers in all 11 games of the 2025 season until he was out on Monday. Tommy Edman and Kiké Hernández are alternative center field options, and Edman was in center field on Monday. Edman has taken over second base after utility Hyeseong Kim struggled in spring, and Hernández is filling in at first base while Freddie Freeman recovers from an ankle injury.
The Dodgers need Pages to clean up the mistakes, or could look at alternative options. Edman could be the team’s every day center fielder, which could lead the team to call up Kim. They could also play Miguel Rojas at second base — like they did on Monday — for the time being.

Pages is not a major-league player and needs to go and study Baseball 101. Too many dumb mistakes that hurt the team. Even kids in the 12U leagues are much more intelligent and savvy on how the game is played.
I agree and disagree. Pages has proven he can hit by his success last year. In time, I believe he would again this year as well. But as SHAKA808U wrote, Pages needs some help learning the nuances of the outfield. I think he could be an adequate, even very good corner outfielder. But he does not have the instincts to play centerfield in the majors without critical tutelage. Most anyone can learn to play the corners but to play center requires natural instincts to quickly discern the defensive needs and the ability to cover a large chunk of the outfield not just by taking charge, but by also not getting in the way when the play dictates. In any event, the organization has a decision to make. Will Pages be a corner outfielder where I believe he would thrive or a centerfielder where his success is more murky. If center is where they see him, then he needs a crash course in playing there, not just this year in the minors but this winter as well. Otherwise, they need to give him a chance with another club
