Dave Roberts on Dodgers vs Yankees World Series: ‘It’s What Everyone Wanted’

For the 12th time in MLB history, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees will face off in the World Series. The Dodgers and Yankees are two of the most popular teams in baseball, also from the two largest markets in the country. This World Series revives a classic rivalry that has not seen the light of day in the postseason since 1981, when the Dodgers captured the title.

The Yankees have the edge in the series overall, holding an 8-3 record against the Dodgers in the World Series. But it’s been over 40 years since the two teams last played for a championship. The modern version of this championship rivalry, taking place in the age of social media for the first time, will surely garner lots of attention.

As Dodgers manager Dave Roberts puts it, it’s the World Series that everybody wanted.

“I’m a baseball fan first,” said Dave Roberts, via Jayson Stark of The Athletic. “And when you’re talking about the two biggest media markets in the world, and you’re talking about the best and brightest stars in baseball on the same field, on the biggest of stages, what baseball fan, what sports fan, wouldn’t want to lock into this Series?”

Roberts added: “So for the Dodgers franchise, for the Yankees franchise, for sports fans, I just think it’s what everyone wanted.”

Though the Cleveland Guardians, New York Mets, and their fans might disagree with Roberts’ take, Dodgers-Yankees seems to be the most popular matchup that could have come out of this year’s playoff race. Aside from the history between these two teams, this series features several of the biggest stars in baseball in Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, and Giancarlo Stanton, who are all also former MVP winners. Ohtani is widely considered the biggest star in the sport globally, and has already attracted a ton of eyes and viewers. Judge led MLB in home runs this season, and Betts is considered one of the most popular players in the game.

This matchup has history, an intense rivalry, and stars galore — what more could be wanted? It’s hard not to feel the importance of this World Series, which will begin at Dodger Stadium on Friday.
