Dave Roberts Reveals Dodgers Will Have Main Closer in 2025

The Los Angeles Dodgers ended an improbable 2024 season hoisting the franchise’s eighth World Series trophy after a year of resilience, injuries, criticism, and more injuries.

For a Dodgers team that just added Shohei Ohtani to the roster for the next decade, L.A.’s complaints were promptly thrown out the window.

The Dodgers had no choice but to grind even harder and utilize their team-first mentality. Through stars suffering broken hands, pitcher after pitcher ending up on the injured list, family emergencies, and seemingly everything else in between, Los Angeles stuck together and beat a juggernaut New York Yankees team in the Fall Classic.

While there are numerous stars in L.A., the Dodgers chose to select a closer based on matchups rather than have a designated closer.

It is more than worth mentioning that Evan Phillips ended the year with 18 saves while Daniel Hudson finished the campaign with 10 of his own, but the final two months of 2024 saw seven different Dodgers earn a save.

For reference, the St. Louis Cardinals —whose Ryan Helsley led MLB in saves with 49—only had three different pitchers close out games in the last two months of the year, with two pitchers only earning a single save in that span.

It should be with great joy that Dodgers fans welcome the latest report on what manager Dave Roberts said of the 2025 closer situation.

Per The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, Roberts claimed that newly-signed Tanner Scott will get a majority of the saves to begin the season for the Dodgers.

Scott, who had 22 saves last season, also threw 84 strikeouts to only 36 walks to finish 2024 with an ERA of 1.75. Scott also finished the year with his highest WAR to date at 4.0 across his 72 innings pitched.

With Kirby Yates —who finished 2024 with 33 saves— also a new bullpen signee, it is safe to say that the Dodgers have a solid bullpen in 2025.
