Dave Roberts Would ‘Love’ to Stay With Dodgers Forever

The Los Angeles Dodgers are entering one of the most significant, impactful and anticipated seasons of all time. All eyes will be on the Dodgers, for better or worse.

People will either root for or against them — there’s no in-between. While players realize the weight of expectations on their shoulders, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will have immense pressure on him, too.

The nature of the job means some fans will call for his job at the first sign of failure. That’s the opposite of unique to the Dodgers’ organization, or to Roberts himself. Every manager receives more vocal hate than love.

That’s why separating internal pressure from external pressure is critical. Clearly, the organization loves Roberts. It’s also clear he wants to be the Dodgers’ manager for a very long time.

Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke writes that Roberts wants to be at the helm of the Boys in Blue “forever.”

“I would love to stay here forever. I played for this organization, I care for this organization, I love the players, I’ve invested a lot of time and care into the players, I can’t predict the future but for me to wear one uniform as a manager, that would be a dream.”

Roberts will enter his ninth season as the manager for Los Angeles. Although the team has come up short more times than not, there’s no denying the amount of winning this team has experienced under his tutelage.

Among all managers in franchise history Roberts, 51, ranks fourth all-time in wins, fifth in win percentage, fifth in total games, second in games over .500, and second in the team’s average finish in the division weighted by games averaged.

Among Dodger faithful, Roberts’ margin for error has been dialed to zero for some time. However, he remains a favorite in the clubhouse and within the Dodgers’ front office. As things stand, Roberts can dream on staying in Los Angeles for a very long time.

  1. With a significantly lessor roster, Mattingly lost the NLCS (2013), followed by two consecutive ousters in the NLDS (’14 and ’15) and was summarily dismissed. Same as our last 3 seasons. He never lost 6 in a row to teams LA finished 22 and 18 games in front of, like we’ve suffered through the last two post seasons. Unlike some, I count the 2020 WS as a valid championship because we had the same exact rules as everyone else and won it, but it’s hard to argue with baseball fans who dismiss it as not a legitimate win. Like the cheating Astr*s in 2017, finally backed up in 2022. That Roberts wants to be here forever doesn’t give me much comfort, and I won’t call for his head during the season unless they are a complete failure. But he has no #%@^ excuses if he continues to fail when it really matters…October. To me, he’s the Marty Schottenheimer of MLB. I hope I’m wrong, but as Disco Stu infamously said, “if these trends continue, heeyyyyyyyyyy”.

  2. Yes, Dave Roberts is an excellent manager for the Dodgers, keep him, by all means.
The *only* drawback Dave has is managing pitchers in game. I’ve noticed a quick hook, when it wasn’ warranted. Tell Sandy Koufax to have a “father-son ” chat about that. Fix ’em right up. 😎

  3. As a Dodgers fan, I agree that Dave Roberts is a good man, but the Dodgers lost to wild card teams in the first round the last two seasons. I would think he has to improve in 2024. This season I would hope he has at least 3 healthy starting pitchers come playoff time. We shall see…

  4. Dave don’t listen to the people that don’t want you. They don’t have to watch the Dodgers. You are doing a good job Dave.your team the Dodgers would love have you forever!!!!

  5. No, Laurie, we would not. If Roberts is ousted in the first round this year, he should be fired. Any major league manager would have the record Roberts has had if they had the talent this team has year in and year out. Some would’ve won a couple more World Series titles. Especially guys like Bochy and Melvin. Roberts has a history of not winning short series. If he does it again this fall, buh-bye!
