Diamondbacks GM ‘In Awe’ of Shohei Ohtani, Was Nervous to Ask Him for Selfie
Shohei Ohtani is the biggest show in baseball, so the Dodgers signing him to a record $700 million contract was a no-brainer. He brings extra star power to the city of Los Angeles, and helps the Dodgers both on and off the field.
Most around the baseball world are in awe of the two-way superstar, including opponents. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen was in awe about meeting Ohtani this offseason, and was even nervous to ask for a selfie.
“Arizona Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen said he was in awe meeting Shohei Ohtani at the New York Baseball Writers dinner and was trying to get the courage to ask for a selfie with him.”
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today
With the two teams facing off against one another 13 times this season, Hazen will have plenty of chances to make that selfie happen, if it didn’t already. Ohtani’s popularity is on a much different level than we have ever seen in baseball, and the Dodgers are loving every second of it.
He transcends stardom on and off the field, which is why Los Angeles was comfortable giving him such a large contract. The front office had wanted him in Dodger Blue for years, but finally was able to get him to agree to sign on the dotted line this offseason.
Ohtani now joins a team with World Series aspirations each and every season. He wants to add to his already impressive collection of accomplishments, and the Dodgers are the team to help him make it possible.
The two sides are putting a lot of faith in one another, but there is hope for major success on the field. The front office has put a powerhouse team around Ohtani, as they attempt to bring another championship back to the city of Los Angeles.
