Dodgers 2020 World Series Champ Jake McGee Announces Retirement

On Thursday, Jake McGee announced his retirement from professional baseball. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times was one reporter who shared the news on Twitter:

McGee was initially selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the fifth round of the 2004 draft.  Across the 13 MLB seasons he pitched, McGee amassed a 3.71 ERA over 650 relief appearances with 79 saves. 

The lefty made his MLB debut in 2010 against the New York Yankees, where he walked out three batters and struck out Derek Jeter. 

While a closer for the Rays, Rockies, and Giants, the 36-year-old also pitched for the Dodgers. 

In Los Angeles, McGee signed a one-year contract for the 2020 season, which was shortened due to the pandemic. In the 24 games he played, he went 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA. McGee also pitched one scoreless inning during the 2020 World Series as the team took home the championship against his former team, the Rays. 

Following the 2020 season, the pitcher signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants. After being released from the Giants, he spent time with the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals.

As he ties the knot on his career, McGee plans to return to Tropicana Field for a game this season to be honored by throwing out one last first pitch. Although he played across multiple teams, McGee wants to forever be known as a Ray.
