Dodgers’ 2025 Shortstop Won’t Be Mookie Betts or Gavin Lux, National Writer Says

The Los Angeles Dodgers came into the 2024 season with a major question mark at shortstop. Gavin Lux was initially expected to take over the shortstop role, but he struggled at the position during spring training coming off a torn ACL.

The Dodgers then switched Mookie Betts to shortstop and moved Lux to second base. The change lasted for the first three months of the season before Betts sustained a fractured hand and the Dodgers had to replace him while he spent nearly two months on the injured list.

Los Angeles primarily relied on Miguel Rojas to fill in for Betts but has also used Tommy Edman in the position since acquiring him. Since Betts returned from injury, he went back to the outfield while Rojas remains the primary shortstop.

This solution has worked for the Dodgers this season. Betts is unsurprisingly doing well in the outfield, where he primarily played to begin his career. Meanwhile, Lux has come on strong since the All-Star break, especially when he hit above .290 in both July and August.

The question is what the Dodgers will do at shortstop next season. The team has a club option available for Rojas in 2025, but the team might not want to use Rojas as the everyday shortstop.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today tells Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation he thinks the Dodgers’ Opening Day shortstop in 2025 comes from outside the organization.

“I don’t think they’re going to do the Betts thing again,” Nightengale told McKain. “He was fine doing it but if you have World Series aspirations, you don’t want a key area in the postseason. Now that Gavin Lux has settled in, why mess around with him? He’s perfect at second base. I don’t think they want to take that gamble again like they did before. (Willy) Adames would be perfect.”

Nightengale added: “Go trade for Bo Bichette, you could do that too. Adames makes the most sense if they want to come up with the money. He’s got a great personality. He’d be a nice fit in L.A. I think with his personality he’d like to be in a big market.”
