Dodgers Bring Back Raul Ibañez in Front Office Role

Raul Ibañez once made Sports Illustrated’s list of the nicest players in Major League Baseball.

The Dodgers liked him so much, they brought Ibañez back to their front office after a three-year absence. The 51-year-old will join the team as vice president of baseball development and special projects.

An All-Star outfielder, designated hitter and first baseman, Ibañez played for the Mariners, Royals, Phillies, Yankees and Angels between 1996-2014.

Ibañez has stayed connected to the game in a variety of capacities since he played his final game in Sept. 2014. He worked with the Dodgers for five years (2016-20) as a special assistant to the general manager, and had been MLB’s senior vice president of on-field operations since February 2021. He also provided baseball commentary on Fox Sports and ESPN shortly after his retirement.

Ibañez was interviewed for the manager’s job in Tampa Bay that ultimately went to Kevin Cash. Last year while still on the MLB staff, Ibañez was chosen to manage the National League team in the Futures Game.

With MLB, Ibañez’s job touched a variety of aspects of growing the game.

What piqued my interest was being able to be part of growing the game, and helping the game, at all levels: the major league level, the fan base level, and at the amateur level.

Ibañez’s duties with the league also included on issues related to rules, equipment and on-field technology.
