Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw Exits Friday’s Game With Apparent Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw has exited Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with an apparent injury.

Kershaw gave up a leadoff home run in the second inning to Corbin Carroll, and then immediately exited the game with a trainer and manager Dave Roberts. Here’s a video of the play:

The Dodgers announced that Kershaw left the game with big toe pain.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters after the game that Kershaw has been dealing with a bone spur in the toe for some time.

The Dodgers held on to beat the Diamondbacks, 10-9, but they used seven relievers to finish the task after Kershaw was removed. Roberts said one or more pitchers will be added to the roster for Saturday’s game against the Diamondbacks.

In six starts since returning from the injured list, Kershaw was 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA coming into Friday’s start. He had walked only eight hitters and struck out 24 in 29 innings. He missed the season’s first three and a half months recovering from surgery on the glenohumeral ligaments in his left shoulder.

A three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, Kershaw became the last full-time pitcher to win an MVP award in 2014. In 17 seasons, all with Los Angeles, Kershaw is 212-94 with a 2.49 ERA.

The Dodgers re-signed Kershaw to a one-year, $5 million contract in February with a player option for 2025. He had already added $2 million to his base salary for this year, and $1 million to his option for next year, by starting six games. However, his 2024 salary was conditional on him being healthy after the season.

Now, even that’s in doubt.
