Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Provides Less Than Optimistic Update on Max Muncy

Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star infielder Max Muncy is nowhere close to a return to the big league diamond.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic and said Muncy’s progress is “stagnant.”

Roberts added that Muncy is still experiencing some discomfort, but tests have come back clean. He remains without a clear timetable for returning.

Muncy last played on May 15 against the San Francisco Giants. Muncy’s oblique injury has been tough to recover from, and when it is time for a return, he will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment before being activated from the injured list.

The Dodgers severely miss Muncy’s pop in the lineup, as he is one of their best sluggers. Prior to his absence, Muncy was on his way to another All-Star level type season. In 40 games, he was slashing .223/.323/.475 with a .798 OPS, nine home runs, 28 RBIs, 31 hits, and 24 runs in 138 at-bats.

Muncy is one of many key Dodger players who have missed significant time this season. Although the Dodgers are still one of the top teams in the league and are at the top of the National League West division, their roster is arguably the best on paper of any team in MLB. However, injuries have severely limited them. Earlier in July, they were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, the team with the best record in baseball.

October is still a little more than two months away, and we’ll see if some of these key Dodger players, like Muncy, will be back and effective by then.

  1. Typical original Roberts optimism about a return timeline, then he drops the bomb about it being much longer than expected. We’ve seen this many times before. Perhaps instead of getting our hopes up, he should predict a much longer return from the DL, then we’d be pleasantly surprised with an earlier return, rather than being disappointed with false optimism. I’m now wondering if Muncy and others on the DL will even be back this year at all.

    1. I agree. Trading for Edman and Rosario leaves me thinking the Dodgers are not optimistic about Muncy, Rojas, and Taylor returning.

    2. Always better to under promise and over deliver. No one is upset when some one comes back before their expected date…

  2. Well, Shit the bed…… I’m shocked! I do think they will ramp him up in a couple weeks regardless tho
