Dodgers’ Dave Roberts On Starting Austin Barnes Against Zack Greinke

Austin Barnes had an incredible 2017, putting up a slash line of .289/.408/.486 and hitting eight home runs in 102 games. For most of the year he was considered a backup catcher, but that narrative started to change towards the end of the year.

Today, against right-hander Zack Greinke, Austin Barnes will get the start! He has never faced Greinke before, but Barnes has put up great numbers against righties this year. In 2017 against right-handed pitchers, Austin Barnes put up a slash line of .321/.444/.459 and an OPS of .903!

This is what Roberts had to say about why he’s starting Barnes against Zack Greinke:

Austin Barnes is coming off of an incredible offensive performance on Saturday where he went 2-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored, and two runs batted in!

He spoke with the media after the game on Saturday and this is what he had to say about the Dodgers’ offense:

These games are dog fights. It’s going to take a team effort, you know, a collective unit. I think we’ve been doing this kind of all year when we were good earlier in the season, on that streak, it was kind of a similar way. We were just grinding through A.B.s, pretty relentless throughout. We were taking what they gave us, you know, if they were going to walk us we were taking the walks and we just trusted someone was going to get the hit.
