Dodgers’ Emmet Sheehan to Face Live Hitters This Week
The Dodgers are close to getting one of their better young arms back from injury. Right-hander Emmet Sheehan will be throwing a bullpen on Monday before he faces live hitters in a few days.
The right-hander has been on the injured list while dealing with general body soreness. At first, it wasn’t expected to be serious, but Sheehan ultimately missed the entirety of spring training.
Getting Sheehan back will be a big boost to the overall depth of the starting rotation. He entered camp with a good chance to be the fifth starter, but his injury opened the door for right-hander Gavin Stone.
When Sheehan does return, the team could look to form a six-man rotation, move Sheehan to the bullpen as a stretch reliever, or place him in Triple-A to start the season. The 24-year-old made a strong first impression in his rookie season last year, posting an ERA of 4.92 over 60.1 innings of work.
Sheehan was never supposed to reach the majors in 2023, but multiple injuries and inconsistent results from the Dodgers’ starters led to him getting his chance. Sheehan made the most of his opportunity — he tossed six no-hit innings against the Giants in his debut — and has become one of the more valuable young pitchers for the team going forward.
