Dodgers: Former Pitcher Told Yency Almonte to Come to LA
It’s sort of insane the way the Dodgers are able to make something out of guys that other teams give up on. But since Andrew Friedman arrived, they have been exceptionally good at finding talent where you least expect it. And they’ve done it again this year.
The Dodgers signed Yency Almonte to a minor league deal this past March. He was coming off of a season with the Rockies in which he posted a 7.55 ERA and struggled greatly with his command. But fans in Los Angeles are seeing an entirely different pitcher.
Almonte has quietly become one of their most reliable leverage relievers. He has allowed just 2 earned runs across 15.1 innings of work and struck out 17 while walking 6. And as it turns out, Dodgers fans have a former reliever to thank for that. (quotes via The LA Athletic)
“I recommend going out there. They know their stuff. They’re gonna teach you a lot of new things that you probably didn’t get in Colorado.” -Jake McGee
McGee and Almonte spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons playing together in Colorado. McGee would then go on to play for the Dodgers and completely turn things around in his career. He must have liked what they had to say because recommending your NL West rivals to a friend is a bold move.

So what did the Dodgers change? Well, mechanics are something they work on with everyone. But he upped his slider usage and it seems to be doing very well for him so far. Whatever they changed, they’ve done a great job finding a diamond in the rough again.
