Dodgers: Former Star Prospect Hoping to Latch On in LA Bullpen

The Dodgers have had a number of successful reclamation projects over the years. One of their latest endeavors is to turn the career around of right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer. Fulmer was the Chicago White Sox’s first-round pick in 2015, but struggled in his four seasons in the majors with Chicago (6.56 ERA in 94.2 IP).

Fulmer has bounced around a bit since his Chicago days. To the pitcher’s credit, he didn’t shy away from his struggles in an interview with The Orange County Register’s Bill Plunkett.

“Being with six different organizations in two years, you kind of hear everything. I think for the most part I said, ‘Yes’ to all of those things.”

The former Vanderbilt University hurler believes that his mental approach to pitching in professional baseball affected the skills that made him a top-ten pick.

“I wanted to fly through the system and make it to the big leagues. I think I wanted to please a lot of people more than just be myself. Even looking at video from Vandy, it brings back a lot of good memories about how I competed back then. I think that’s the biggest step right now.”

Fulmer says the message from the Dodgers coaching staff has been fairly straight-forward.

“I just have to pitch to what I’m good at. I think that’s all they want me to do here. They think that I’m going to be a very big part of this organization and I think that’s really reassuring.”

As Plunkett notes, Fulmer and Dodgers ace Walker Buehler were teammates at Vanderbilt. The two have been friends ever since. Fulmer says that Buehler was “excited” about the Dodgers acquiring his former college teammate back in December.

At the moment, the Dodgers seem to have plenty of arms available for the bullpen, but having another capable relieve never hurts.
