Dodgers: Freddie Freeman Gives Back at First “Love LA Community Tour” in Blue

A year ago, Freddie Freeman was stuck in limbo. He had hit free agency a few months earlier, and then the owners’ lockout put everything — including Freeman’s ability to decide his future — on hold. When the lockout ended, the Braves decided to trade for first baseman Matt Olson instead of re-signing Freeman, and Freddie eventually signed with the Dodgers.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Freeman, who grew up in Orange County and went to El Modena High School. After 12 years playing in Atlanta, Freeman was finally near his family and friends as a big leaguer.

This is Freeman’s first offseason as a Dodger, and he and his family are taking part in the team’s “Dodgers Love LA Community Tour.” They were at the Salvation Army branch in Long Beach on Tuesday to help distribute food to families in need.

For Freeman, it was special to be in his old stomping ground helping the community in a Dodgers jersey.

“It’s just special being back, and especially (near) the place where I grew up in Orange County, to come out and do stuff like this. It’s one thing signing with a team and playing. It’s another thing of getting your feet on the ground in the community. From the day I walked into Spring Training, I walked into Chavez Ravine and put on this uniform, the community has welcomed me with open arms.”

The specific cause was special to the Freemans, too, coming from “seven generations that are Salvationists.”

“The Salvation Army is very near and dear to our hearts. And giving back to the community is special.”

This was the first event of the community tour, which will end with FanFest at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.
