Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes Provides Update on Dave Roberts Extension Talks
The Los Angeles Dodgers are not finished making moves this winter. The Dodgers have signed some of the biggest names in the 2024-25 free agent class, from Blake Snell to Tanner Scott, but there is one important piece to the team that has yet to be addressed.
The Dodgers still need to finalize extension talks with manager Dave Roberts.
“It’s something we’re going to address here in the coming weeks,” said Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes on The New York Post’s The Show podcast this week. “We want Dave here. He’s been incredible.”
One could argue ‘incredible’ is an understatement for Roberts’ impact on the Dodgers. He is the winningest manager in MLB with a .627 clip. Roberts is coming off his ninth year managing the L.A. organization, which ended in his ninth consecutive postseason appearance and second World Series title.
Roberts has overseen five 100-win seasons with the Dodgers, while only Joe McCarthy and Bobby Cox have more. Although the Dodgers have won two championships throughout his tenure, Roberts’ job is by no means easy.
The expectation that comes with being the manager of the Dodgers is not only to win, but to win consistently. Roberts will be tasked with overseeing one of the best rosters in the history of baseball, and perhaps most importantly, deploying all the right pieces in order to win another World Series.
While Roberts’ job comes with immense pressure, he has effortlessly handled taking care of the players in his clubhouse. Few other managers are as respected and loved as much as Roberts is.
Miguel Rojas told Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain he believes Roberts is the perfect guy to manage the Dodgers.
“That’s why I feel like he was the perfect guy for this group to have, because he knew the group,” Rojas said after the Dodgers won the Fall Classic in October. “He knows there’s gonna be a difference from like one player or one pitcher or whoever it is, or coaching staff, whatever. He got the whole thing figured out, because it’s him knowing the group and what everybody’s things are. The motivation for everybody was different, so he knew the group and he knew everybody.”
Mookie Betts also said Roberts was the ‘real reason’ the Dodgers won the World Series in 2024.
“To be honest, Dave is the real reason why we’re here,” Mookie Betts said after the World Series, via ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez. “I know there’s a lot of talk about Doc, but Doc is the best, man. Doc loves each and every person in here, Doc has confidence in each and every person in here, Doc never lost confidence in anybody in here. And no matter what we went through, he was always positive.”
The relentless optimism from Roberts is something his players treasure, and the quality has likely contributed to his success as manager of the Dodgers. The road to a back-to-back World Series won’t be easy, but Dodgers fans can remain confident with Roberts at the helm.
