Player of the Day – Darnell Sweeney

Sweeney got off to a slow start in the month of June, but has since strung together three straight multi-hit games with four extra base hits, including a pair of homers Friday. On the year, Sweeney is batting .306/.394/.464, placing sixth in the Southern League in average and OPS.

The downside is his defense has really taken a step back since returning to shortstop. Sweeney fits much better at second base, where he began the season, but is now playing short with Arruebarrena in Albuquerque.

Sweeney also needs to shore up his baserunning, as he’s been caught in 10-of-17 stolen base attempts. Still, Sweeney’s offense, particularly his ability to get on base, has been a very pleasant surprise.
