Players of the Day – Julio Urias and Jose De Leon
Two of the system’s top performers took the hill for the final time in 2014 and each of them left their mark. Urias, who turned 18 less than three weeks ago, allowed a two-out double in the first inning, then proceeded to retire the next 13 batters he faced. He ends the year with a 2.36 ERA and 109 strikeouts in just 87.2 innings.
De Leon, a virtual unknown coming into the season, has been one of the most surprising prospects in the system this season. After dominating in Ogden, he received a late season promotion to Single-A Great Lakes where he set the single game record for strikeouts in Loons’ history with 14.
He finished his season with a 12-strikeout performance, matching the mark he broke earlier in the month. Overall, De Leon struck out an incredible 119 batters in 77 innings, a rate of 13.9 strikeouts per nine innings, which led the entire organization.
