Dodgers News: Caleb Ferguson Reacts to Viral Game Saving Double Play

When Bobby Miller came out of Wednesday’s game in the top of the 7th, it looked like the Diamondbacks were on their way to breaking the 0-0 scoreless tie. The D-Backs had runners on first and second with no outs and Geraldo Perdomo coming up.

The Dodgers went to the bullpen and brought in Caleb Ferguson to stop the damage. That is exactly what he did, and he did it in style.

On the first pitch that Ferguson thew, Perdomo bunted the ball straight in the air in between the pitcher and the third baseman. Ferguson came off the mound and made the best play of his career as he dove to catch the ball, get up and double up the runner who left second base.

Ferguson was impressed by his game-saving play. Not only is he happy with himself catching the ball, he was proud of getting the ball over to second to get the extra out.

“When the ball was put in play it was just a reaction,” Ferguson said. “I saw the ball in the air, go get it kind of thing. I think what I was more happy about was I finally threw the ball to a base without throwing it into the outfield. That’s the big takeaway for me.”

Following the double play, Ferguson got Corbin Carroll to ground out and end the inning. The Dodgers took Ferguson’s diving play and turned it into momentum for the offense.

In the following half inning, they broke the scoreless tie after David Peralta drove in two runs on a single. That is all the Dodgers needed en route to a two-game sweep at Chase Field.

That diving play was just another showing of the solid season that Ferguson is putting together. In 49 games, he has a 2.91 ERA and has struck out 52 batters in 43 innings. He has been one of the most consistent pitchers out of the Dodgers bullpen.

The Dodgers are now taking their three-game win streak against the D-Backs and Padres back home as they are set to face the Colorado Rockies in a four-game series this weekend.
