Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Provides Update on Freddie Freeman’s Ankle Injury Ahead of Game 3

Freddie Freeman is doing everything he can to play through his ankle injury. If this was the regular season, he would be on the injured list for at least a month.

But, this is the postseason and the pain became unbearable on Sunday night in a 10-2 loss to the San Diego Padres in Game 2 of the NLDS that he had to remove himself from the game in the sixth inning.

His status for Game 3 on Tuesday is to be determined but manager Dave Roberts did give a brief update during his postgame press conference.

“I got word in the middle of the game that his ankle was really bothering him,” Roberts said. “He was down, really down, and just couldn’t keep going.

“We had no other choice. He’s doing everything he can. I don’t know what his status will be like for Game 3. But for tonight, we had no other option.”

Freeman did not address the media after the loss.

After spraining his ankle during the Dodgers’ NL West-clinching game against the Padres on Sept. 26, Freeman missed the final three regular-season games. However, he returned to action just over a week later.

There were concerns about Freeman’s availability for Game 1 of the NLDS, as he was still dealing with some ankle soreness. Despite that, he managed to complete his pregame routine and, with the help of medication, played the full nine innings. Freeman went 2-for-5 in the series opener and even stole a base during the Dodgers’ 7-5 victory.

Before Game 2, Roberts mentioned that it was a “much easier” decision to include Freeman in the lineup, even though Freeman wasn’t feeling significantly better than the previous day. However, he understood how to manage the injury during a game.

Freeman had a great Game 1 and the Dodgers were hoping he would carry that over into Game 2 but unfortunately that didn’t happen.

Freeman started at first base but went hitless in two at-bats against Padres pitcher Yu Darvish.

Roberts will have to monitor Freeman on a daily basis moving forward.

“It is not ideal,” Roberts said. “It is of concern. It’s day to day and there’s nothing we can do about it. We have a workout tomorrow evening and then we’ll just kind of see where he’s at with treatment. And then, once we get to Tuesday, we’ll see how he feels, and then we’ll do the same thing for Game 4. Again, it’s not ideal. But I think this is what we’ll have to be dealing with for the duration.”
