Dodgers News: Diego Cartaya Surprised By His Recent Power Surge

The Dodgers have to feel excited about the future with Diego Cartaya. He’ll turn 21 this September, and he’s already one of the most well-polished hitters in the minor leagues. Since he was signed out of Venezuela for $2.5 million in 2018, scouts have praised his poise in the box.

But since they got him at such a young age, there was no telling how his power would pan out as a professional. But the Dodgers have encouraged him to utilize the pull side in the box, and that has paid dividends.

Even Cartaya was surprised with how his power numbers have been this season. (quotes via MLB.com)

“I’m kind of surprised I have 17 home runs this year. I never thought that I was going to be a power hitter. I just try and put a good swing on the ball, and good things are happening.”

If he can keep up this kind of improvement, there is no reason to think that Cartaya won’t be up with the Dodgers soon. He could even have a role on this team as soon as 2023, depending on how things progress.

The Dodgers are closing in on getting Edwin Rios back. After suffering a hamstring strain, Rios was eventually placed on the 60-day injured list. But he started his rehab assignment in Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday night, meaning he could very well be returning to the big league squad soon.
