Dodgers News: Dustin May Feels He’s Understanding What it Takes to Manage the MLB Grind

Dustin May was named the number two starter for the Dodgers heading into the regular season. While a primary reason for the move was to separate the lefties Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw at the top of the rotation, it also is a show of confidence in the hurler entering his fifth big league season.

Another offseason removed from 2021 Tommy John surgery and fully healthy, May is ready to settle into the grind of a full season for the first time. He spoke with AM570 LA Sports Radio recently about being ready to take the next step as a big leaguer and do big league things.

“The pitching is going to be there. I mean, it’s just more about just repeating and going out day-to-day. But now it’s more so taking care of yourself in between and making sure that you’re going to be ready when the season comes and being able to go out and go every fifth or sixth day or whenever my name is called.”

His career up to this point has been very start/stop each season. In his debut season in 2019, Dustin spent time going back and forth from Triple-A and in and out of the rotation for LA. The next season, the pandemic wiped out 102 regular season games. 2021 was the year his elbow gave in his fifth start of the season. And 2022 was spent recovering from surgery.

Now at 25, he’s a long way from the lanky red-headed 21-year-old that made headlines with that nasty 100-plus mile-per-hour fastball. He talked about his growth with AM570, and how he’s taking care of his body better than ever.

“I’m getting a little bit older. So understanding my body and the way that it works and the way to go about taking care of myself and eating off the field and working out off the field, it’s getting to be easier to know what I need to do to be ready for the next one.”

Dustin May has never been as important to the Dodgers as he is heading into the season. He’s had a nice showing up to this point this spring and is primed to put together a monster season for LA.
