Dodgers News: Jimmy Nelson Elects to Stay With LA, Heads for Second Rehab Assignment

A Dodgers reliever is back in a familiar place as he tries to make his way to Los Angeles once again.

Jimmy Nelson is once again going on a rehab assignment as he tries to come back from elbow inflammation that started in spring training, flaring up from his Tommy John surgery. Nelson has yet to pitch in the majors this year.

Nelson has had a rough go at it since he’s made his way to the Dodgers. Since signing the righty to a free-agent contract in the 2020 offseason, he’s only been able to pitch in 28 games.

Halfway through the 2021 season, Nelson went down with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He had to miss the rest of the season and the entirety of the 2022 season.

The Dodgers were hoping that Nelson would be healthy enough to have an important role in the bullpen for the 2023 season. Nelson looked like he was finally ready to pitch heading into spring training.

After a few appearances in Arizona, the Dodgers placed him on the 10-day injured list due to his elbow inflammation to start the year.

Now four months and a rehab assignment later, the Dodgers may actually get Nelson back.

The Dodgers sent Nelson on a second rehab assignment, something he needed to formally accept. He did, and he’s now back in Triple-A.

In his last rehab assignment with the OKC Dodgers, Nelson went back onto the injured list because the inflammation flared up again. The Dodgers are hoping that he has rested his arm enough and is finally past the elbow problems.

Nelson has already started his second rehab assignment this week in Triple-A, pitching a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout. If all things go right, the Dodgers may have more help in the bullpen as the race to October approaches.
