Dodgers News: LHP Justin Bruihl Traded to Rockies
The Dodgers are making some small moves ahead of the 3 PM PST trade deadline for all of Major League Baseball. Justin Bruihl, a soft-tossing lefty reliever, is heading to Colorado for cash considerations. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com was first to report on the news.
In three years with the club, Bruihl was a somewhat reliable middle-inning reliever. In 66.2 innings with his now former club, Bruihl owned a 3.65 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. This year, his numbers increased a little bit and possibly his ceiling was reached with his low-velocity fastball.
In 24.1 innings of work in 2023, the 26-year-old pitcher had a 4.07 ERA and only 19 strikeouts. While his pitch to soft contact approach worked, the Dodgers may have wanted a little more strikeout stuff coming out of their pen.
This trade happened after the Los Angeles club announced they were going to designate the bullpen arm for assignment earlier this week. The DFA move was used to free up roster space for newly acquired pitchers Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly.
This move should start off a busy deadline day for the Dodgers as they will look to bring in another starter to add to the rotation before they make their final playoff push.
The still-young pitcher has a lot of controllable years left, being scheduled to be a free agent in 2029.
Best of luck in Colorado, Justin!
