Dodgers News: Major Injury Updates on Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, Dustin May

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a whirlwind of an offseason since lifting their eighth World Series trophy in October.

Acquiring Cy Young award-winning pitchers, international phenoms, and veteran pieces to bolster the offense, the Dodgers have not received much, if any, bad news since October.

As spring training is in full swing, manager Dave Roberts provided some injury updates on a few key Dodgers.

October hero Freddie Freeman didn’t show it, but he was dealing with an ankle injury that required surgery all postseason long. After undergoing his surgery this offseason, Roberts revealed that Freeman has yet to start running or fully participate with the team.

Luckily, the skipper added: “I’m not worried about it.”

All-Star catcher Will Smith has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury since last season, and is “a little behind” schedule, the Dodgers revealed upon reporting to Camelback Ranch.

Roberts gave a promising update on Smith’s injury, saying that he is “moving better than Freddie. I would say Will will be in a game next week.”

The skipper also provided an update on the unfortunate injuries to pitcher Dustin May.

May, who has been out since the middle of the 2023 season undergoing flexor tendon surgery and a subsequent Tommy John revision, almost had a fatal injury that slowed down his recovery.

A bad bite of salad caused him to rupture his esophagus in what he called “a life-altering event.”

Roberts spoke very highly of the now fully-recovered May.

“He is 100 percent healthy right now. Yesterday he threw the ball really well,” said Roberts. “I think this year is going to be his best year.”

These are certainly promising words for the 27-year-old, but also for a Dodgers pitching staff that had a slew of injuries slowing them down in 2024.

As these core pieces for L.A. continue to recover with Opening Day right around the corner, the Dodgers hope to become MLB’s first back-to-back champions in a quarter-century this season.
