Dodgers News: Miguel Vargas Sent Down; Justin Turner Activation Imminent

The Dodgers players got to enjoy an off day today, but the LA front office was still hard at work rejiggering the roster. The team apparently optioned prospect Miguel Vargas on Monday afternoon according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya

“The Dodgers optioned Miguel Vargas, per the transaction log. Would imagine that’s the corresponding move for Justin Turner coming off the IL tomorrow.”

Vargas, one of the Dodgers top prospects, started two games this past week. In the first at-bat of his MLB career on Wednesday against the Giants at Oracle Park, the Cuban infielder logged a RBI double.

He finished his first stint with the Dodgers batting .250 in eight at-bats with just one strikeout.

Vargas has steadily climbed through the Dodgers farm system since starting out with the AZL Dodgers back in 2018. He currently owns a .291/.382/.497 slash line in 94 games with the OKC Dodgers (Triple-A) this year (437 plate appearances).

The biggest question for Vargas as far as his MLB future is whether or not he’ll be serviceable enough in the field, but the implementation of the universal DH certainly plays up in his favor.

As Ardaya mentions, the Dodgers sending their number five overall prospect back down is likely in anticipation of veteran slugger Justin Turner being activated off of the injured list.

Turner last played on July 27th and landed on the IL with an abdominal injury.

All signs point to Turner being back on the roster for the Dodgers two-game set against the Minnesota Twins.

  1. I think the Giants are beyond frustrated….understandably. However, unsportsmanlike conduct (down right spoiled brat conduct) is not the solution! And where did it get them? Gabe Kapler ejected and they were left looking like fools!!
