Dodgers News & Rumors: Dodgers Pay $11.4 Million In Luxury Taxes
The last couple of years the Los Angeles Dodgers have become the New York Yankees of the West, spending an immense amount of money in order to put the best team together and in order to chase a World Series title. Since purchasing the Dodgers, the Guggenheim Group has made winning a World Series title a priority, at any cost.
The Dodgers own the second highest payroll in baseball, only behind the New York Yankees. In 2013 the Dodgers’ payroll was $236,872,242 and because it exceeded the $189 million threshold, they’ll be paying $11.4 million in luxury taxes. Only the Yankees will be paying more in luxury taxes, but they’re used to that after having the most expensive payroll for 15 straight years.
The Dodgers blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox brought in huge contracts, including Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and Josh Beckett. This past off-season they spent heavily on Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Yasiel Puig, but they’ve all become integral parts of the Dodgers and will be so for a long time.
This off-season the Dodgers have been active, but haven’t made any blockbuster trades or any huge free agent acquisitions. They’ve been rumored to be interested in Rays’ pitcher David Price, but that hasn’t materialized. The Dodgers are also considered favorites to land Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, but he’s yet to be posted.
