Dodgers News: Vin Scully Wins 2016 Award for Best Call of the Year

Last week, Vin Scully was surprisingly honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award, but the real winners were the fans who were lucky enough to listen to Scully’s last call of Charlie Culberson’s walk-off home run that gave the Dodgers their fourth straight division title.

Well, members from the media, front office, retired players, fans of the MLB and Society for American Baseball Research all agree that the call made by the greatest baseball announcer of all time was good enough to win the ESurance MLB Award for Best Call of the year on either television or Radio.

“Can you believe — a home run?”

“And the Dodgers have clinched the division and will celebrate on schedule.”

He paused for several seconds, then set the scene.

“Leave it to the Dodgers. Charlie Culberson, a game-winning home run. Would you believe his first home run of the year?”

Vin Scully beat other nominees that included:

  • Indian’s Tom Hamilton call of Tyler Naquin’s inside the park home run.
  • Charlie Slowes’ call on Max Scherzer’s 20th strikeout
  • Padre’s Don Orsillo and Mark Grant calling Yangervis Solarte’s catch in the stands.
  • Mets Gary Cohen and Ron Darling’s call of Bartolo Colon’s first career home run.

Where were you for Vin Scully’s last call?

Thank you, Vin!
