Dodgers News: Walker Buehler Opened Eyes in First Game Action in 450 Days

Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler took a big step in returning from his second Tommy John surgery, pitching two innings in Triple-A Oklahoma City without allowing a hit or a walk. He effectively retired batters, taking just 24 pitches to get through two innings.

Buehler’s return to the mound marked the first time he played in a game since June 10, 2022. With Buehler not showing any sign of setbacks, the door could be open for the star pitcher to return to the big leagues just in time for the playoffs. Roberts has previously said that he hopes Buehler can return as a starter in the playoffs.

“I think right now it’s about making sure you get the pitch count up, making sure the stuff’s there,” Roberts said. “Sprinkle in some command then, most importantly, making sure after he comes out of it that he feels well.”

Buehler’s 2021 season, in which he held a 0.97 WHIP and 2.47 ERA and a 16-4 record, cemented the 29-year-old as one of the best pitchers in the major leagues. Now, as he returns from a second elbow reconstructive surgery (his first was in 2015), Buehler might have to shake off some rust in his return.

The Dodgers are in a prime position to take off in the playoffs. In August, they went 24-5 and now possess the third-best record in the major leagues, behind the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles. The addition of Buehler to the Dodgers’ starting rotation would make it one of the best in baseball.
