Dodgers Full Trade Analysis

Receive: INF/OF Tommy Edman, RHP Michael Kopech, RHP Oliver Gonzalez

Trade Away: OF Miguel Vargas, INF Alexander Albertus, INF Jeral Perez, two PTBNL or cash

How Will the Dodgers Use Tommy Edman?

Edman can play all over the infield and outfield, and will likely fill in at third base and shortstop while Max Muncy, Mookie Betts, and Miguel Rojas remain out. Additionally, Edman can play center field, which will be helpful as Andy Pages continues to struggle defensively.

Edman is a career .265 hitter with an OPS of .726. He has 89 stolen bases over the last three years.

Who is Oliver Gonzalez?

Gonzalez is a 17-year-old right-handed pitcher from Panama. He signed for $400,000 in the most recent international class and has pitched 21.1 innings in the Dominican Summer League this season, sporting a 4.22 ERA.

How Will the Dodgers Use Michael Kopech?

Kopech’s stats don’t jump off the page as he has a 4.74 ERA, but the Dodgers are likely excited about his high strikeout rate and whiff percentage.

Kopech has a 30.9 strikeout percentage and 30.6 whiff percentage. He also ranks in the 99th percentile in fastball velocity.

The Dodgers will likely make a quick adjustment and turn him into a dominant high-leverage arm.

  1. Lets hope we get some starting pitching, that can contribute not only in the regular season, but also the post season. With all the other teams looking for starting pitching like we are, I hope we dont lay an egg at the trade deadline as to getting a game changer pitcher. I will say that the 2 rookies pitched very well in Houston, but 1 or 2 MLB games does not necessarily make them playoff ready. We shall see what happens.

  2. So this is the big move? Underhwelming… But when you wait until the last hours of the trade deadline this is what you are left with. I had hoped for a starting pitcher, if not the arrogant Crochet then maybe a Jack Flarety. Doesn’t look like that is going to happen. Of course not, we have have top notch pitching coming back…Sometime before next year…

  3. We don’t go after impact pitchers at the trade deadline. We just talk about it and get everybody’s hopes up. They had better hope that Kopech can start…

  4. this BLOCKBUSTER will send shock waves throughout baseball!! just hand the Dodgers the World Series trophy now! (sarcasm)

    1. As long as Pryor is pitching coach, it’s a scrambled thrown together starting rotation and the usual tired broke down bull pen every year. The Dodgers keep sending their prospects in to learn on the fly and obviously Pryor is over his head.

      1. Its got nothing to do with Roberts or Pryor and everything to do analytics minded Friedman and Gomes who think the best bet is always their next reclamation project. The trades so far have been nice but can hardly be called BLOCKBUSTER! Friedman blockbuster deal occur during the offseason or not at all, with the exception of the Sherzer/Turner trade of 2022…

  5. Lets hope they are finished trading for injured players that have not played at this year!!!

  6. Since when did every trade around the deadline become a blockbuster??? There is not a true game changing impact player in this trade.

  7. No “WOW” factor. Where’s that impact player? Gave away 5 players and cash for untrusted guys. Lost out on Paredes which was needed for in exchange of half of what just got traded away. Hmmmmmm………

Wasting your assets for much more needed help.

  8. Why was this trade labeled a blockbuster? Does that mean when we picked up Cavan Biggio it was a blockbuster transaction? Nothing about this is even exciting

  9. Exactly what is the true definition of “blockbuster”? To me , it sounds like something in a prison or a chain gang.

  10. I’m still waiting for the real blockbuster, but we only have five+ hours left. Losing hope for it and for the season.

  11. Blockbuster? A bunch of mediocre, re-habbing, and questionable-value players being shuffled around? If this is the idea of a Blockbuster Trade, it certainly fits the Friedman/Roberts mantra. This is pathetic news and another crystal ball glimpse of the “musical chairs” infield-outfield this year.
