Dodgers Pitcher JP Feyereisen Provides Update On His Physical Condition

The Los Angeles Dodgers had a bullpen ERA of 3.42 in 2023, good enough for third-best in Major League Baseball. Going into 2024, the bullpen gets back a player who did not pitch in 2023, but talent-wise could be one of the best of the bunch: J.P. Feyereisen.

In 2022, the Dodgers traded prospect Jeff Belge to the Rays for the right-handed Feyereisen after the Rays designated him for assignment two days prior. At the time, Feyereisen had undergone surgery to repair his rotator cuff and torn labrum, so the Rays let him go.

While he could not pitch at all in 2023, the Dodgers still have Feyereisen under team control until 2027, giving him plenty of time to get healthy.

In an interview with Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain, Feyereisen provided an update on his physical health and how he’s feeling after missing all of 2023 following the injury:

If not physically better, at that same point. Last year was a pretty good reset, and my arm feels great. I haven’t had any issues with it. No setbacks since the end of this past year. I’m feeling good. So I’m excited for this year.

When Feyereisen, 30, is healthy he is one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. Just before the injury, Feyereisen pitched 24.1 innings with the Rays without allowing an earned run. He only has a small sample size of major league stats since making his debut in 2020, but he does boast a career 2.31 ERA and 1.004 WHIP.

Feyereisen certainly seems excited to get back to work and help contribute to this powerhouse team. Describing his off-season regimen, his arm appears ready to make 2024 a normal season:

I’ve been playing catch all off-season. I’m actually going to head down a little early to spring, get into some warmer weather out of this Wisconsin, and get to the complex a little bit here and there to work with some of the guys on the team, and also some of the coaches.

A healthy, motivated Feyereisen could take this bullpen from third to first. The Dodgers’ ability to mix and match relief pitchers has played to their favor immensely in recent years. With Feyereisen’s talented arm in the mix along with other veterans returning from injuries like Blake Treinen, 2024 could be something special.
