Dodgers Pitching Coach Reveals Why Shohei Ohtani Didn’t Throw Latest Scheduled Bullpen

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani was scheduled to throw a bullpen Wednesday, but those plans were scratched.

Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior explained to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register that Ohtani did not throw while he was at home on paternity leave last weekend, so the Dodgers wanted him to play catch a few times this week in order to build back up.

Ohtani is next scheduled to throw a bullpen Saturday. The pitching saga has been quite the rollercoaster for the Dodgers as the team navigates a two-way player.

Nevertheless, the priority for Ohtani remains pitching in October.

“Time of return, we’re still at a couple of months away,” manager Dave Roberts said recently. “I know that’s still vague. We’re just trying to get to the next step and see where we’re at. Certainly expect him to pitch for us this year and through the postseason.”

The Dodgers superstar is off to a slow start offensively in the sense that he isn’t putting up the same numbers he had previously recorded through the first 23 games in 2024.

There are several changes for Ohtani in 2025 as he prepares to return to two-way status with the Dodgers. Beyond the sport, Ohtani became a father last weekend, and part of the reason for his slump could be the lack of sleep or simply the overall lifestyle change being a new family of three.

  1. Why does it not surprise me that a Twitter link omits much of the important stuff. I’m not saying none of the alphabet soup stats are significant, but curious that such minor things as RBI’s, runs and SB are not shown. BA and home runs are less significant than the 3 I listed, what’s better, 6 home runs with 8 RBIs or 4 home runs and 30 RBIs? My numbers are not intended to be accurate, nor are they, but just how unimportant “sweet spot” is.
