Dodgers Release All-Star Pitcher, Who Immediately Signs With Rival Giants and Joins Roster
The Los Angeles Dodgers released left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz, who officially opted out of his minor league contract early Friday morning. It didn’t take long for him to find his next home — and an MLB opportunity.
The San Francisco Giants have signed Pomeranz to a one-year deal, and have immediately added him to the MLB roster, the team announced.
Pomeranz, 35, signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers this offseason, opted out in April, and then re-signed with the Dodgers on another minor league contract. However, the team didn’t ever call him up to the big leagues, and on Friday, he found another opportunity at the big-league level in San Francisco.
Pomeranz last pitched at the MLB level in 2021 when he was with the San Diego Padres. However, he missed the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injury, and his future in baseball was unclear.
The Dodgers gave him a chance this offseason, and he made eight appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City, sporting a 6.00 ERA across nine innings with 14 strikeouts. They never gave him an MLB opportunity, though, so he’s now getting it in San Francisco.
Pomeranz was immediately added to the active roster, so he could make his 2024 debut as early as Friday night against the New York Mets.
The 11-year veteran has a career 3.91 ERA in 858.1 innings pitched.
