Dodgers Renew Andrew Toles’ Contract for 2024 Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers have renewed the contract of former outfielder Andrew Toles for the 2024 season, per the Associated Press.

Toles has dealt with mental health struggles for the last few years and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He hasn’t played since 2018, but the Dodgers have continuously kept him on their payroll so he could have access to their insurance.

Toles has been on the Dodgers’ restricted list since 2019, meaning he doesn’t count against the team’s active roster limit but still gets the health benefits from being on the team.

Toles appeared in 96 games with the Dodgers from 2016-18, and slashed .286/.333/.459 with eight home runs and 35 runs batted in.

Dodgers Nation wishes the best to Toles and his family, and commend the Dodgers for continuing to look out for Toles.

  1. Say what you will about our Bois en Bleu, you can’t deny that keeping Tolsey under contract simply so he can continue getting insurance to get the help he needs is 1000% a class act. Well, you can deny it, but that’s a lot more of a You problem than a Dodgers problem. I still miss Tolsey, but I’m glad he remains a part of the team.

  2. I agree with Mr. Hardin 1000%. (Btw, that is a very large percentage). Maybe other teams do the same thing and we don’t hear about it — I hope they do. However, we do hear that the Dodgers take care of their own. There are many former Dodgers that have been “taken care of” by the Dodgers. I doubt if any have been helped more than Andrew Toles maybe with the exception of Roy Campanella. I had the opportunity to be around Andrew when he was healthy. Andrew was a very nice, appreciative happy person and a pleasure to around. I sincerely hope those days come back to Andrew.

  3. It is a good point that other teams may extend contracts for players to acquire insurance; but this is an example of how the Dodger Organization considers all of its players, FAMILY. Andrew is an excellent ball-player and no doubt a person of good character, deserving of this courtesy.

    Best wishes, Andrew.
