Dodgers: Resetting the 40-Man Roster Following Stale Trade Deadline
Whelp… the trade deadline has come and gone and the Dodgers had themselves a snoozefest. For the most part, it seems like the front office took the “addition by subtraction” approach to the day, opting to trade away multiple fringe assets while bringing in a once feared slugger.
First, Joey Gallo joins the LA ballclub coming from the New York Yankees in exchange for minor league pitcher Clayton Beeter. The other needle-moving transactions saw two 40-man guys leave the organization with starting pitcher Mitch White heading to Toronto for minor league pieces and DH Jake Lamb heading to Seattle for cash considerations.
The moves both provided the Dodgers with 40-man roster flexibility, which the front office desperately needed. Garrett Cleavinger was traded on Monday with roster space in mind.
After the deadline, the club quickly took advantage of its newfound roster space by calling up top hitting prospect Miguel Vargas and adding him to the 26-man active roster. How long he’ll be active remains to be seen as Gallo will need a spot to join the team later today.

Altogether, that’s 49 players with 10 of those on the 60-day IL which does not coumt against the 40-man limit. That leaves one roster spot currently open for the return of someone like Dustin May who is the first player expected back off the 60-day in the next weeknto 10 days.
Certainly, LA will need to clear a few more for the activations of players like Blake Treinen, Walker Buehler, and Edwin Rios heading toward October.
The Dodgers continue their series in San Francisco for two more games before returning to Dodger Stadium to face the revamped San Diego Padres.
