Dodgers Rumors: LA Assistant Linked to Angels as Potential Next Manager

It seems that the Dodgers may have some say, even a small amount, about the potential new manager for the cross-town rival Los Angeles Angels. The Angels are searching for their new manager after they let Phil Nevin go, and they are narrowing their search.

It has been reported that owner Arte Moreno prefers a more veteran manager for his team next season and that he wants to field a competitive roster, as well. Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times put together a list of potential candidates for the Angels, and one member hails from the Dodgers organization.

That would be special assistant Ron Roenicke, who hasn’t been a manager in the big leagues since 2020 when he was with the Boston Red Sox. The veteran has been with the Dodgers since early 2021.

“The Dodgers special assistant, who is from Los Angeles, told The Times this week he is not too interested in managing again, but would consider an opportunity if it meant staying in Southern California.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

It remains to be seen if the Angels would even be interested in Roenicke, but if they were, they would need to get permission from LA to speak with him. LA would likely grant it, but these situations are always fluid.

“If there was interest, the Angels would need permission from the Dodgers to interview Roenicke.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

In addition to his season with Boston, Roenicke was the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers for four seasons from 2011-2015. He hasn’t made the playoffs during his time as a manager, so the Halos may elect to go in a different direction.

But he does have connections to the team and knows how Moreno runs the organization. That could give him a slight boost in his favor if the team were to interview him.

It’s interesting that his name was mentioned as a candidate since he hasn’t managed since 2020, but the Angels are likely casting a wide net for their next leader. This should be interesting to see play out as the offseason really gets into the swing of things.
