Dodgers Rumors: MLB Insider Lists Miguel Vargas As Potential Trade Candidate
At one point in time, Miguel Vargas was regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball as he was ranked the fifth-best prospect in the MLB and No. 1 in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2022.
After having a disappointing season in 2023 where he was sent back down to AAA by July, Vargas is now a name that could be traded away this offseason as MLB Insider Mark Feinsand listed him as a potential trade candidate for the Dodgers this offseason.
“Vargas’ production in the Minors hasn’t translated to the Majors yet, but the 24-year-old is still highly regarded around the game and could help the Dodgers bring back a desperately-needed arm such as Tyler Glasnow or Corbin Burnes. Vargas has slashed .310/.392/.487 in 470 games in the Minors since 2018, but that line stands at .191/.290/.350 in 99 big league contests.”
Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com
After having an impressive slash line of .304/.404/.511 and 17 home runs with 82 RBIs in 2022 in AAA, Vargas seemed primed and ready to make his debut for the Dodgers in the majors.
However, Vargas struggled to fit the part in 2023 as he held a slash line of .195/.305/.367, only knocking in seven home runs for 32 RBIs and a dreadful 61 strikeouts in 256 plate appearances.
While receiving all the help they can in the infield remains a need for the Dodgers, starting pitching is the priority for the Dodgers this offseason.
As of right now, the Dodgers only have two names that will for sure be in the starting rotation next year in Bobby Miller and Walker Buehler.
While Miller definitely looked the part last year, Buehler is coming off Tommy John surgery for a Dodgers rotation that is riddled with injuries already.
The team is poised to make a trade this offseason, especially with a name like Dylan Cease available on the market.
If the Dodgers are able to pull off a move like this, they will likely have to move on from at least one or two top prospects, making Vargas a likely candidate to be moved.
